The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a woman on a motorcycle in Lake County.
The 36-year-old Leesburg woman had been riding a southbound 2009 Yamaha motorcycle at 10:44 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Hwy. 27 at Citrus Grove Road north of Minneola when she had a green traffic signal and began traveling through the intersection, according to an accident report from FHP.
A 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was southbound and the driver failed to notice the slower traffic and struck the rear of the motorcycle, pushing the motorcycle into a 2024 Honda HR-V, driven by a 42-year-old Polk City woman. She had swerved out of the path of the slowing traffic. The Tahoe also struck her vehicle.
The motorcyclist was transported to South Lake Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Tahoe fled the scene. The vehicle was ditched on the median on U.S. Hwy. 27, three miles north of the crash scene. It has been impounded for processing.
The Polk City woman and her 47-year-old and 6-year-old male passengers were not injured. They remained at the scene of the crash and cooperated with investigators.
