A Lake County man is suspected of drunk driving in a New Year’s Day head-on collision that claimed the life of a man traveling as a passenger in another vehicle.

The 32-year-old Groveland man was driving a Toyota Tacoma pickup at 1:21 a.m. southbound in the northbound lane of U.S. Hwy. 41 in Hernando County when his vehicle collided with a Dodge Ram pickup traveling northbound, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 44-year-old Brooksville man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A 17-year-old Brooksville girl had been driving the Dodge Ram pickup. Other passengers included a 45-year-old Brooksville woman and a 15-year-old Brooksville boy. They were all treated at area hospitals.

The FHP report did not identify the Groveland man, but said that “alcohol impairment is suspected.”
