A Davenport woman was arrested for retail theft this week after a Walmart employee noticed she stole merchandise through self-checkout seven times.
A loss prevention officer caught 41-year-old Bernnadette Martinez Diaz failing to scan items on seven different occasions while using the self-checkout register at Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon paying for the scanned items, Martinez Diaz passed all points of sale without paying for the unscanned items. These incidents occurred on May 6, twice on May 14, May 16, May 18, May 31 and June 14. The total value of the unpaid merchandise was $198.46, none of which was recovered, the report said.
All incidents were captured on the store’s security cameras, and copies of the footage were given to law enforcement. Martinez Dias was taken into custody at the store Monday afternoon as a result, the report said.
The native of Puerto Rico was charged with seven counts of petit retail theft. She was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $3,500 bond.
