A Leesburg man was arrested for not paying for his drink after the owner of a downtown pub chased him down and detained him until police arrived.

Jake Tyler Nail, 37, was charged with retail theft (resisting a merchant) after the incident, which happened Tuesday night at McCracken’s Irish Pub, located at 719 W. Main St.

Officers responded to the business at around 10:55 p.m. and were told the suspect – later identified as Nail – was behind the building with the owner. The officers went to the area of 111 S. 6th St. and took Nail into custody, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

The owner told officers she was advised by an employee that Nail had fallen from his stool and was leaving the business without paying for the drink he had been served. The owner said she talked with Nail and explained he had not paid for his $9 tab. As another manager went inside to retrieve a cup of water and the tab for Nail, he took off running from the business, the report said.

The owner followed Nail and caught up with him near 5th and Magnolia streets. She detained him until law enforcement arrived, according to the report.

Nail was taken to the Lake County Jail, where he was released on his own recognizance based on his written promise to appear in Lake County Court on Aug. 22.
