The driver of a BMW has surrendered on a DUI manslaughter charge in the death of a 5-year-old boy after a weekend crash in Lake County.
Daksh Wadhwa, 30, of Tavares turned himself in Wednesday morning at the Lake County Jail. Bond was set at $30,000. It was noted that Wadhwa also turned over his passport.
The Mount Dora child died Sunday at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando.
The child had been riding in a 2008 Honda Civic driven by a 29-year-old Mount Dora woman at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on County Road 448 at Shirley Shores Road in Lake County when her vehicle collided with a 2022 BMW 740i which had swerved into her lane, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The woman was seriously injured and transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
Wadhwa provided a breath sample that registered .189 blood alcohol content. He was also found to be in possession of cocaine. He was initially arrested on charges of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine. He had been free on bond.
He is now facing a charge of DUI manslaughter as a result of the child’s death.
