A Eustis man was charged with DUI after being pulled over for speeding early Sunday in Fruitland Park.
Shortly before 4 a.m., a Fruitland Park police officer observed a dark car traveling south at a high speed on State Road 25 near Palm Street. Radar showed the vehicle was traveling 65 mph in a 45-mph zone. The officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle didn’t pull over until it reached Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Leesburg, according to the police report.
The driver was identified as 30-year-old Kyron DiJhon Jamaar Furlow, of 2225 Jennah Circle in Eustis. Furlow moved slowly and mumbled when he spoke with the officer. He said he had his driver’s license but forgot where he put his wallet, the report said.
While talking with Furlow, the officer noticed the odor of marijuana and alcohol coming from the vehicle. The passenger in the vehicle said he had smoked marijuana and drank alcohol earlier in the evening, but Furlow had not. The officer asked both occupants to get out of the vehicle, and Furlow struggled to turn off the ignition because he couldn’t find the “off” button, according to the report.
Once Furlow was out of the vehicle, the officer confirmed the smell of alcohol was coming from him. Furlow agreed to perform a series of field sobriety exercises, which he failed. He was taken to the Lake County Jail, where he provided breath samples that came back with readings of .091 and .090, the report said.
Furlow was released later Sunday on $1,000 bond and will appear in Lake County Court on Nov. 1. He was also given a speeding ticket.
