Leesburg couple being extradited to New Mexico for grand theft auto

A Leesburg woman who’s being extradited along with her husband to New Mexico also faces drug charges in Lake County after deputies found meth in her pocket.

Lorie Marie Duke, 44, of 1414 N. Lake View Ave. Lot 20, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting without violence after her arrest on Tuesday. She’s being held in the Lake County Jail on $4,000 bond. Her husband, 43-year-old Buddy Duke, is being held without bond as a fugitive from justice for failure to appear in court in New Mexico.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies were investigating a death at a nearby residence when they determined Buddy Duke had an active New Mexico warrant for grand theft auto. Duke was placed in custody and taken to jail. Prior to him being taken away, Lorie Duke came over and said the warrant has been taken care of and he should not be arrested, according to the sheriff’s office report.

As they wrapped up the death investigation, deputies learned that Lorie Duke also had a warrant from New Mexico for grand theft auto. Prior to leaving, a deputy saw Lorie walking from a neighboring yard. He asked her for her name and she refused to give it. The deputy knew who she was because she was with her husband while he was being arrested, the report said.

When told she also had a warrant and she needed to place her hands behind her back, Lorie started hollering loudly for someone to help her. The deputy grabbed her arms and started escorting her toward a building to use for support while placing her in handcuffs. Lorie continuously pulled away from the deputy, kept screaming, and reached for her pants pockets, according to the report.

A neighbor heard screaming and came to help Lorie, who was trying to empty her pockets but couldn’t because she was in handcuffs. Once at the patrol car, the deputy removed the items from her pockets. In her left pocket were various bills, along with a clear plastic baggie that contained crystals that tested positive for methamphetamine, the report said.

Lorie Duke is scheduled to appear in Lake County Court on the drug charges on Aug. 8.
