A Eustis man who ditched a BMW with a gun inside was arrested on a host of charges after a foot chase through the neighborhood of East Bates Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

Shawn Jamal Mosley, 24, of 2001 Suanee Ave., was charged with armed trafficking of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia resisting an officer without violence, driving with a license suspended for fleeing or eluding, and two counts of possessing an unauthorized state ID. Five probation violations were added later. Mosley’s being held on $21,000 bond in the Lake County Jail.

Shortly after 3 p.m., a Eustis police officer was in parking lot of a Wall Street business and facing east when a grey BMW with a temporary license plate traveling west on Dixie Avenue rolled past the stop sign and stop bar at Wall Street without stopping until it was in the intersection. The vehicle turned south onto Wall Street and slowed but never stopped at the sign at the intersection with Bates Avenue, according to the police report.

The officer activated the patrol car’s emergency lights and siren to conduct a traffic stop, and the BMW made a sharp right-hand turn into the driveway in the 1700 block of Bates Avenue. The vehicle traveled down a short driveway and the driver’s door opened while it was still moving. A black male with thick dreadlocks wearing a black t-shirt and black pants – later identified as Mosley – tried to jump out of the driver’s seat and fell on the ground, the report said.

Mosley got up and fled west behind the house as the vehicle continued to roll forward. The officer ordered him to stop but he jumped a metal fence and ran back towards Bates Avenue with the officer in pursuit. The chase continued west across Ellsy Street, through a patch of woods and to a residence on Rose Lane, where the officer saw Mosley knock on the door of a home. The officer pulled his taser and ordered Mosley to show his hands, but he ran around the back of the residence, according to the report.

At that point, the officer put back the taser, pulled out his firearm and ordered Mosley to show his hands. Mosley, who was between two trash cans, put his right hand up and was secured into handcuffs by two officers. One officer, who recognized Mosley from prior encounters, patted him down and grabbed a large amount of cash from his right front pants pocket, the report said.

A search of the BMW turned up a black and white handgun between the center console and driver’s seat. The firearm as loaded with eight 9mm rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. An iPhone was next to the gun. Inside the console, officers found a clear plastic baggie with one knot containing a crystal substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine, along with another baggie containing a white cake-like substance that tested positive for crack cocaine, according to the report.

Beneath the bags of drugs in the center console was a stack of IDs with Mosley’s name. There were also two Texas driver’s licenses with the names “Barve Atul Madhukar” and “Burt Duane.” Both contained Mosley’s photograph. Officers also found a small black box on the passenger side that contained a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine, the report said.

Total weight for the narcotics were 30 grams of methamphetamine, 7 grams of crack cocaine, and 2 grams of powder cocaine, according to the report.

At that point, Mosley claimed he couldn’t breathe. He was taken by Lake County EMS to Waterman Hospital. At the hospital, Mosley told the officer that if the two of them were in the woods, the officer wouldn’t come out, referring to him harming the officer. Once Mosley was medically cleared at the hospital, he was taken to jail. He’s scheduled to appear in Lake County Court on June 6.
