Rowdy passengers result in traffic stop, drug arrests

A pair of 19-year-old Leesburg men were arrested on drug charges after their vehicle was pulled over early Sunday because two back seat passengers were hanging out their doors while the car was moving.

Eduardo Perez-Zendejas, of 1508 Woodlyn Drive, was the driver of the red four-door Hyundai. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance (LSD) without a prescription and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. Tyler Bradley Newton, of 1110 E. Main St., was the right-rear passenger. He was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl and psilocybin) without a prescription and possession of marijuana. The other two passengers were juveniles.

At around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a Lake County sheriff’s deputy was traveling south on U.S. Hwy. 27 near Marlene Street when he observed a red vehicle coming out of the Lakeside Retreat at 27 apartment complex and turning north onto Hwy. 27 with two white males with more than half of their bodies hanging out of each rear passenger door. The deputy followed the vehicle as it turned onto County Road 25A and headed south, failing to stop at a stop sign at Connell Road before turning north back onto Hwy. 27, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The deputy stopped the vehicle as it was turning into the Lee Motel and told Perez-Zendejas he was being pulled over because his passengers were hanging out of the windows. The deputy also told Perez-Zendejas about the stop sign violation. The smell of marijuana was emitting from the vehicle and the 15-year-old front seat passenger appeared impaired. The deputy told Perez-Zendejas that because of the odor of marijuana, he was going to search the vehicle. Perez-Zendejas told deputy there was a small container of marijuana in the center console area, and Newton handed the deputy his wallet and said it contained marijuana, the report said.

At that point the deputy observed a glass smoking device that contained residue near the right-rear passenger door handle. On the front driver-side floor was a small clear plastic container on the front-driver floor that contained a rolled-up piece of foil. Inside the foil were two LSD blotter squares. Perez-Zendejas told the deputy the container was his and the substance was LSD, which a field test confirmed. The marijuana in the center console also tested positive, according to the report.

The deputy then checked Newton’s wallet and found a bag that contained psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana, and another bag that contained a yellow powder that tested positive as fentanyl. After being read his Miranda warning, Newton confirmed the narcotics were psilocybin mushrooms and a hallucinogen, the report said.

Perez-Zendejas and Newton were taken to the Lake County Jail, where they’re being held on $3,000 and $5,000 bond, respectively. Both are due to appear in Lake County Court at 8:30 a.m. May 23.
