Grandchild dies at hospital in Leesburg after run over on Easter by grandmother

A grandchild died at a hospital in Leesburg after she was accidentally run over on Easter by her grandmother.

The 70-year-old Groveland grandmother was driving a van and dropping off family members at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the driveway at 918 County Road 48 in Groveland and everyone exited the vehicle, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The grandmother did not notice the 7-year-old girl who was in front of the van and the grandmother put the vehicle in “drive” and began to move forward, the report said. The van hit the child.

The little girl was transported by ambulance to UF Health-Leesburg Hospital where she later died.

The grandmother was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
