Leesburg man critical after 2-vehicle crash that claims life of Clermont man

A Leesburg man was critically injured late Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Clermont man.

The crash took place in Sumter County on State Road 50, west of County Road 721 shortly before 5 p.m. The 59-year-old Leesburg man was traveling westbound in a pickup truck when he failed to maintain control of his vehicle and entered the eastbound lane, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

The pickup slammed into another pickup that was being driven by a 58-year-old Clermont man who suffered fatal injuries in the crash, the FHP report says.

The Leesburg man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, the FHP report says.

Due to a policy change last year, the FHP no longer identifies people involved in accidents.
