Leesburg Police officers lauded for saving life of vehicle passenger who had stopped breathing

Two Leesburg Police officers are being honored for helping to save the life of a resident who had stopped breathing.

Cpl. Brent Williams and Senior officer Jim Dunagan were honored recently for saving the life last November of a vehicle passenger who had stopped breathing.

On Nov. 18, 2020, Cpl. Brent Williams observed a vehicle pull into a bank parking lot with the driver quickly exiting and pulling the passenger from the vehicle while summoning help. Williams immediately responded to the parking lot and discovered the passenger wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse, a report states.

Williams called for EMS and initiated CPR. A short time later, Senior Officer Jim Dunagan arrived and assisted Williams with the life-saving effort. Prior to EMS arriving, the passenger was revived and both officers continued to monitor the patient. The passenger was subsequently transported by Lake EMS to UF Health Leesburg Hospital for further medical treatment.

“The quick and efficient response of these officers, on that day, undoubtedly saved the life of this Citizen and exemplifies the core values of the Leesburg Police Department!” a post on the department’s Facebook page reads.
