COVID-19 has claimed seven more local residents as Leesburg hit a milestone in the cumulative number of cases of the virus that have been reported in the city.
Five of the latest fatalities were in Marion County, with one each in Lake and Sumter counties. They are among the 989 tri-county area deaths, the 23,981 in Florida and the 386,996 across the country.
Lake County is now reporting 18,753 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 216 in a 24-hour period. There have been 339 deaths and 1,073 people have been hospitalized.
Leesburg is now reporting 3,023 cases – an overnight increase of 39. Others have been identified in Clermont (4,910), Eustis (1,630), Mount Dora (1,415), Tavares (1,382), Groveland (1,251), Lady Lake (1,087), Sorrento (513), Minneola (512), Fruitland Park (499), Umatilla (414), Mascotte (393), Montverde (237), Grand Island (233), Howey-in-the-Hills (150), Astatula (143), Altoona (125), The Villages (119), Paisley (73), Astor (73), Yalaha (50), Okahumpka (34), Ferndale (8) and Mount Plymouth (8).

All told, Florida is reporting 1,531,192 cases – an increase of 13,720 from Wednesday to Thursday. Of those, 1,503,529 are residents. A total of 70,238 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 28,073 in correctional facilities. Across the state, 67,036 people have been hospitalized.
