Five more local residents have lost their battle with COVID-19 as Florida reported its biggest increase in the number of new cases in two weeks.
Two of the latest fatalities lived in Lake County, one lived in Sumter County and two were residents of Marion County. They were identified Thursday by the Florida Department of Health as:
- 82-year-old Lake County woman who tested positive Sept. 24;
- 79-year-old Lake County man who tested positive Oct. 27;
- 77-year-old Sumter County man who tested positive Sept. 18;
- 82-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Oct. 31; and
- 81-year-old Marion County woman who tested positive Nov. 4.
All told on Thursday, Florida reported 827,380 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 6,257 from Wednesday to Thursday. Of those, 816,376 are residents. A total of 51,759 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 24,574 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 17,170 deaths and 50,077 people have been hospitalized.
Locally, Lake County is reporting 9,047 cases – an increase of 100 from Wednesday to Thursday – among 4,169 men, 4,696 women, 63 non-residents and 119 people listed as unknown. A total of 715 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 275 in correctional facilities. There have been 234 deaths and 758 people treated in area hospitals.
Leesburg is reporting 1,494 cases – an increase of 14 in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Clermont (2,274), Tavares (806), Eustis (724), Mount Dora (687), Groveland (616), Lady Lake (396), Minneola (243), Mascotte (235), Fruitland Park (204), Sorrento (199), Umatilla (187), Montverde (138), Grand Island (96), Howey-in-the-Hills (67), Astatula (66), The Villages (42), Astor (41), Altoona (40), Yalaha (36), Paisley (35), Okahumpka (18), Ferndale (5) and Mount Plymouth (3).

The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 118 cases among 16 inmates and 102 staff members.

A total of 1,425 cases have been reported among inmates (1,318) and staff members (107) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.
