The department, which operates 8 parks, the Venetian Center, and a multitude of facilities across the city, was awarded the 2020 Excellence in Sports Tourism, Small Market Award during a ceremony held in Orlando earlier this month. The nomination for the award came from the Greater Orlando Sports Commission, who cited the city’s $11.2 million investment in upgrades to the Venetian Gardens, helping make Leesburg one of the top southeastern venues for hosting large scale fishing events.

In the last fiscal year, the city of Leesburg has partnered with Visit Lake and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission to host seven fishing tournaments that have generated nearly $5 million in economic impact to the area, according to the department.

“On behalf of our staff and board of directors, we offer a heart-felt congratulations to the City of Leesburg’s Parks and Recreation Department that was recognized by their industry peers who voted on this prestigious award,” said Jason Siegel, President & CEO of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission.

Leesburg boasts the distinction as the northern most city or county to receive an award, with most other recipients coming from southern Florida.
