Lake County students who are at risk for not graduating high school due to low performing reading scores will receive extra help, thanks to a donation from the Clay Electric Foundation.
The $5,000 grant will fund the district’s ACT Reading Prep Program, which helps students prepare for the reading section of the required Florida standardized test. Lake County high school students can meet graduation requirements by receiving an ACT Test score that is comparable to the passing score on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.
“The funding will be used to purchase student manuals, teacher lesson plans, and training and professional development services,” said Carman Cullen, Executive Director of the Education Foundation of Lake County. “This generous donation is especially critical because we know many students are struggling through various obstacles to learning due to the pandemic.”
Last year, 431 high school students were able to participate in the program.
The grant was awarded from the Clay Electric Cooperative’s “Operation Round Up” program, where the co-op’s members elect to round up their monthly bill to the nearest dollar with the tax-deductible amount going to the Clay Electric Foundation. The Education Foundation of Lake County is one of eight organizations receiving a grant.
