Leesburg Commission OKs repairs on pedestrian bridge hit by boat

Leesburg commissioners gave their blessings Monday night to a plan to move ahead with repairs to a pedestrian bridge in Venetian Gardens that was damaged when it was struck by a boat.

Leesburg commissioners OK’d a plan Monday to hire ESX Construction to perform $51,000 in repairs to a pedestrian bridge behind the new Venetian Center.

Commissioners agreed to approve and execute a release authorizing Travelers Insurance to distribute a $51,000 payment to the city. They also agreed to sign an agreement with ESX Construction LLC, of Howey-in-the-Hills to make the repairs at a cost not to exceed that amount.

The bridge was damaged recently when a boat from Nobles Marine Sales struck pile bent. Three piles and several connecting structural supports were damaged in the mishap, a memo from Purchasing Manager Mike Thornton and Public Works Director DC Maudlin says.

The city had issued an invitation on May 30 for the bridge repairs, which generally will include disassembling the damaged portion, removal of three pilings, installing new pilings, replaced structural support members and reassembling the bridge deck and railing. ESX

Construction LLC was the only company to respond to the inquiry and both of its references checked out with city staff, the memo says.
