Couple jailed on litany of drug charges after sheriff’s raid at Astor home

An Astor couple was arrested last week on multiple charges after a raid on their home turned up a cache of illegal drugs.

Undercover narcotics detectives and the SWAT team from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant this past Wednesday on a home at 55543 Fern Road in Astor that was occupied by 61-year-old Tanis Thyra MacFarland and 57-year-old Paul Andrew Spence. They were located inside the home along with two other suspects.

During the search of the residence, detectives located hydromorphone, marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine and drug paraphernalia, a sheriff’s office report states.

MacFarland was charged with possession of hydromorphone with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana over 20 grams with the intent to distribute, possession of a legend drug with the intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released on $20,000 bond and is due in a Lake County courtroom on April 8 at 8:30 a.m. to answer to the charges.

Spence was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held on $6,000 bond and is due in court April 8 at 8:30 a.m.

James Russell, who was inside the residence, was issued a misdemeanor citation for possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The investigation came as the result of several complaints regarding possible drug activity taking place at the home, the report says.
