Scott Robert Burlison

A Leesburg toll taker who admitted to stealing money while on duty was arrested Tuesday night and charged with grand theft.

According to Florida Highway Patrol report, Scott Robert Burlison was taken into custody at the Leesburg Toll Facility, located at mile marker 278 on Florida’s Turnpike in Howey-in-the-Hills. An audit of Burlison’s daily activity had revealed shortages while he collected toll revenue in various lanes, the report states.

When confronted by an FHP trooper, Burlison admitted to taking the toll money, but he said he wasn’t sure of the amount. He confessed that it could be close to $1,000, stating that he needed it for medical bills. And he admitted to taking $100 Tuesday night and hiding it in his car, the report says.

Burlison was transported to the Lake County Jail and held on a $1,000 bond.
