A Fruitland Park woman was arrested for battery after allegedly punching her niece on the arm for running a red light.
An officer observed two subjects arguing in the parking lot of a shopping center, located at 1319 S. 14th St., around 5:50 p.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Another officer arrived on scene and spoke to the female victim who advised that she was driving to drop her friend off at her residence. The victim’s aunt, identified as 35-year-old Alisha Diane Jackson, was sitting in the front passenger seat, the report said.
The victim stated Jackson was upset because of her driving behavior. She ran a red traffic light, and a verbal argument ensued between the two. The victim got on the phone with her grandmother and was told to pull over. Once she pulled into the parking lot of the shopping center, Jackson began to punch and strike her right arm, the report said.
In an interview with the witness, she stated she was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle when the incident occurred. She heard the victim and Jackson arguing about running the red light. She then observed Jackson striking the victim, the report said.
Because of the verbal and written statements from the victim and witness, Jackson was detained with handcuffs and placed under arrest. The incident was domestic in nature due to the victim and Jackson living together, having blood relation and being direct family members, the report said.
Jackson was first taken to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, located at 600 E. Dixie Ave., to be medically cleared from a surgery incision that appeared to be infected, the report said.
Once cleared, Jackson was transported to Lake County Jail and charged with simple battery (domestic). Bond was set at $1,000.
