A native of Honduras who traveled from South Carolina to Leesburg for work, ended up in jail after he was involved in an automobile crash.
An officer responded to 3400 Southwinds Cove Way to assist police who were already on scene investigating a vehicle collision at around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Upon arrival, the officer observed 28-year-old Elvis Gerardo Rodriguez Estrada standing near a gray Toyota Camry. He advised that he was driving the Toyota, and there were no passengers with him. He identified himself using his passport from Honduras and stated he was primarily Spanish speaking without knowing much English, the report said.
The officer relayed Rodriguez Estrada’s information to dispatch who advised that he did not have a driver’s license, nor had he ever been issued one. Rodriguez Estrata confirmed that he did not have a Florida driver’s license and had been staying at a local hotel in Leesburg for several weeks for work. He was a welder for an unknown company and was visiting Leesburg from SC in order to work in the area, the report said.
Rodriguez Estrata was not able to give an address of residence in Florida or in South Carolina. The officer relayed his vehicle information to dispatch who advised that the gray Toyota Camry was registered to Rodriguez Estrata and provided an address out of South Carolina. Dispatch confirmed that he did not have a driver’s license from South Carolina or any other state, the report said.
Rodriguez Estrata was subsequently arrested on charge of operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license. He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $500 bond.
