A pair of New York women were arrested for retail theft when a Walmart employee caught them leaving without scanning several items.
A deputy responded to Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27 in Clermont, regarding a retail theft around 5:32 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.Â
Upon arrival, the deputy met with an asset protection employee who advised that he was monitoring the sales floor over CCTV cameras when he noticed 39-year-old Yselda Maria Nunez and 34-year-old Eden Blaise Perez failing to scan items. The two were accompanied by another woman, and all three went to self-checkout to scan items, the report said.Â
The third woman was only seen placing items onto the counter of the register while the two suspects were observed failing to scan items and bagging them. Nunez did not scan foam plates, dryer sheets, mints, Zyrtec and a massaging tool. Perez did not scan strawberries, bacon and detergent, the report said.Â
Nunez then pushed the grocery cart toward the grocery-side doors while Perez finalized the transaction. While Nunez was walking toward the exit, she opened the freezer and selected two 20lb bags of ice. She placed them into her cart before leaving through the grocery-side doors, leaving all points of sale without trying to pay for the unscanned items, the report said.Â
The employee approached Nunez, identified himself and escorted her to the Loss Prevention Office. Perez’ location was unknown at that time, but she returned to meet with deputies at their request, the report said.Â
Nunez stole seven items with a retail theft value of $35.41. Four items were stolen by Perez with a retail theft value of $31.0. The stolen items were given back to the store, and photographs of the items were taken as evidence, the report said.Â
Both suspects were arrested on individual charges of petit retail theft. They were transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting their respective $500 bonds.Â
