Officers responded to a weapons complaint at an undisclosed Leesburg residence around 10:57 a.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. The LPD Communications Center advised responding officers that an individual who was recently involved in a shooting, later identified as 18-year-old Gavin Leroy Wells, was present at the location with a firearm.

Officers arrived on scene and met with the complainant outside the residence. He advised that the individual he called about was asleep inside and in possession of a brown firearm with an extended magazine, the report said.

Officers entered the residence and approached Wells who was lying on the couch in the living room. They observed a tan and black handgun with an extended magazine lying on his chest. They then secured the firearm and detained Wells, the report said.

The firearm was found to be a 9mm Taurus G2C. The LPD Communications Center advised it was stolen and reported to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The firearm’s stolen status was confirmed by the LPD, the report said.

The complainant completed a sworn written statement advising officers that Wells came to the residence sometime during the night and tried to give him the handgun in exchange for a firearm that one of Wells’ friends had stolen from him. The complainant took possession of the firearm but suspected it was stolen. He then gave it back to Wells for that reason. He spoke with his family members who advised him to call the police, and he did, the report said.

Wells was subsequently arrested and charged with theft of a firearm. He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $2,000.
