A Georgia woman suspected of shoplifting was arrested for calling 911 when law enforcement attempted to take her into custody.
Deputies responded to Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27 in Clermont, regarding a theft in progress around 6:16 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The loss prevention officer advised that there was a group of individuals concealing items within the store.
The deputies arrived on scene and began investigating the theft at which time a crowd grew to see the incident, including 60-year-old Charla Renee Gregory. The suspects began to escalate, and Gregory started shouting at deputies. She was upset with the situation and stated she was going to call 911, the report said.
Gregory was immediately advised not to do so because it would be a crime, as law enforcement was already on scene. Shortly after, the Lake County Communications Center advised that she had called 911 after being warned not to, the report said.
One of the deputies approached Gregory and tried to take her into custody, but she walked away toward the store. He then grabbed her arms and pulled them behind her back. However, she resisted his efforts and tried to pull them to the front of her body. She was eventually placed in handcuffs and transported to Lake County Jail without further incident, the report said.
The Texas native was charged with misuse of 911 and resisting without violence. She was released from jail after posting $2,000 bond.
