Golf cart company closing Leesburg shop, firing 20 employees

A golf cart company has closed its facility in Leesburg and will relocate to South Carolina, terminating 20 employees who chose not to relocate.

Columbia Vehicle Group, Inc. announced the closure of its facility at 2505 Industrial Street in Leesburg through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Notice filed with the Florida Department of Commerce last month.

According to a letter from the company’s human resources department, the facility in Leesburg will close on August 2, 2024, and operations will be transferred to Aiken, South Carolina.

The company, doing business as Columbia ParCar, originally opened its Leesburg facility in 2017.

That facility was billed as a “one-stop shop” for manufacturing, painting, and maintaining cars entirely on-site, according to a report by Villages-News.com about the opening.

According to last month’s filing, employees were offered jobs at the new facility and opted not to relocate.

“While all employees at our 2505 Industrial Street location were given the opportunity to transfer to the new facility, 20 employees have chosen not to relocate as of this date,” reads the letter.

The list of impacted employees includes 10 assembly technicians, 2 warehouse associates, a seamstress, and a warehouse manager, among others.

Earlier in May, the company announced that it would be making a $12.2 million investment and would create 180 new jobs in Aiken County, according to a statement issued by the office of South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.

The news of the golf cart facility’s closure comes just a couple of weeks after Cutrale Citrus Juices announced that it is shutting down its plant in Leesburg. That closure will result in the termination of 117 employees.
