Pedestrian struck and killed on State Road 40 in Lake County

A pedestrian was struck and killed early Wednesday morning on State Road 40 in Lake County.

The 26-year-old Umatilla man had been standing in the westbound lane of State Road 40 west of Blue Creek Lodge Road near Astor at about 4 a.m. when he was struck by a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 58-year-old Polk City woman, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

She swerved to try to avoid hitting the pedestrian, however the right side of her vehicle struck the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The crash remains under investigation.
