A deputy was responding to a call for service near County Road 435 and Dubsdread Drive around 9:24 p.m. Tuesday when he spotted a white Ford pickup truck believed to be stolen, the report said. The call for service referred to a citizen spotting the stolen truck driving around the area.

The deputy then initiated a traffic stop on the driver, later identified as 49-year-old Jason Paul Richardson. Upon the deputy activating his blue flashing lights, Richardson accelerated and fled the area. The deputy launched a GPS tracking device at the truck which made contact with the roof of the vehicle, the report said.

The truck was later stopped at Colby Place and State Road 46 where the deputy observed Richardson getting out of the driver’s seat and running into a wood line. He was found in the wood line and placed under arrest while a check of the vehicle’s VIN confirmed it was stolen out of Lake County, the report said.

Richardson subsequently advised that he had a backpack which was located on the front passenger seat. While searching the vehicle, the deputy also found a glass pipe with a burnt round end inside a pocket of the backpack. Richardson’s wallet contained his Florida ID and social security card along with two ID cards and a social security card belonging to three separate people. Richardson stated that he found those cards in a shoebox and had since stored them in his wallet, the report said.

As the deputy opened the rear door of his patrol vehicle to speak with Richardson, he observed a clear plastic baggie at his feet, the report said. Richardson admitted that it came from his shoe and contained methamphetamine, which he stated he used. He also stated that he tried fleeing the traffic stop due to the fear of driving with a suspended license. When asked about the vehicle being stolen, he stated, “I should have known it was stolen, but I didn’t.”

A check of Richardson’s driving history revealed that he had five guilty dispositions for driving while his license was suspended. These ranged from June 2010 to May 2024 and were out of Lake and Orange counties, the report said.

Richardson was ultimately arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended or revoked (third or subsequent offense), unlawful possession of personal ID of another person, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officer and grand theft of a motor vehicle. He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $12,000.
