Mark Henderson Chafin died peacefully on March 21, 2024 in Eustis, Florida at the age of 97. He had been a resident of Mt. Dora for the past 41 years. A proud native Floridian, Mark was born on August 23, 1926, and grew up in the small panhandle town of Wewahitchka. Mark left Florida when he joined the Navy in 1944. He proudly served as a Gunner’s Mate on a Sub Chaser in the South Pacific.

Upon his Honorable discharge from the service in 1946, he made his home in the Bay Area, California, and worked at Alameda Naval Air Station for 35 years in Jet Mechanics and Systems Analysis. After the loss of his first wife, Christine Saunders Chafin, Mark pulled up stakes and came home to Florida in 1983.

Mark was the youngest of five siblings, including three sisters (Clarice, Edith, and Gertrude) and one brother (Hubert). After moving to Mt. Dora, Mark met and married Erline McCormack, a native Floridian and resident of Zellwood. They were married 29 years until Erline’s passing on July 4, 2023. Kindred spirits, Mark and Erline were inseparable, spending their time with friends and family.

Mark loved working in his woodshop and helping Erline create beautiful crafts of all kinds, which they bestowed on family and friends. They enjoyed dancing together, decorating their home, gardening and boating on the many lakes and waterways surrounding Mount Dora. When not out and about, they were dedicated fans of the music and pageantry of the Saturday evening Lawrence Welk show.

Mark and Erline each had three children from previous marriages, including Erline’s two daughters and son (Mindy McCormack, Julye Phillips and Mark Leslie McCormack) and Mark’s two daughters and son (Randy Chafin, Nanci Nunes, and Peggy Budnick). Mark is survived by his blended family which also includes nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends will be held later this year. In lieu of gifts or flowers, and in recognition of Mark’s South Pacific Navy service in WW2, please consider making a donation to Veterans of Foreign Wars, where Mark and Erline first met.
