A deputy responded to an undisclosed Tavares residence regarding a battery complaint around 6:33 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The caller stated she was in an argument with her mother, 46-year-old Catherine Elaine Schmidt, who was preventing her from leaving along with grabbing and pushing her.

Upon arrival, the deputy spoke with the victim who stated that Schmidt called her into her bedroom by yelling at her. She went into the bedroom and tried to help Schmidt pick up stuff from the cabinet that had fallen off the wall. One of the glass bottles broke, and Schmidt told her that she was being disrespectful and that she was tired of her being disrespectful recently, the report said.

The victim turned away to remove herself from the argument when Schmidt grabbed her right arm and pulled her back toward her. She pulled back from Schmidt and told her to stop pulling her arm, causing her to let go and walk to the living room area, the report said.

The deputy then talked to Schmidt who advised that she was showering when one of the cabinets started to fall off the wall in the bathroom. She yelled for the victim to come and help her. While they were cleaning up the mess, something broke on the ground, the report said.

The victim stated that it was not her fault and asked why Schmidt was yelling at her. They began to argue, and when the victim was walking away, Schmidt grabbed her shoulder as she was walking out of the room. At some point, the victim hit her in the face twice with an open hand before leaving the bedroom, the report said.

During the investigation, the deputy did not notice any signs of physical injury to either party. The victim reiterated that Schmidt grabbed her forearm but denied striking her in the face. Schmidt stated that she was unsure where the victim struck her or how many times yet advised it was possibly twice despite only feeling one hit, the report said.

Schmidt did admit to “placing her hands on the victim’s shoulder.” Both she and the victim stated the entire incident happened in the bedroom and that there were no independent witnesses, the report said.

At that point, Schmidt was arrested and charged with simple battery (domestic). She was transported to the Lake County Jail with bond set at $500.
