Neftali Angel Baez, 35, was charged with battery after being brought in by the Leesburg Police Department for the November incident.

On the evening of Nov. 13, police responded to an undisclosed Lake County address regarding a battery. Upon arrival, the male victim stated at 6:41 p.m., he received a text message from Baez asking him to meet him at a local shopping center to speak about an undisclosed incident, according to an arrest report from LPD.

The victim stated he agreed to meet with Baez at the predetermined time and location, the report said. He noted that upon his arrival, Baez got out of his vehicle and without hesitation struck him in the face with a closed fist twice with rings on. He then said, “Now we’re even.”

The victim noted that even after being struck, Baez got into his vehicle and left, and the victim left as well. He stated Baez was upset because on Nov. 8, an unidentified person and Baez’ son were involved in a battery, which resulted in the arrest of another unidentified person. Additionally, the victim stated he had known Baez for about 13 years, the report said.

The officer observed a large swelling about the size of a golf ball above the victim’s right eye. He also had a small laceration above his right eye and another near his left eye. The injuries had dried blood, the report said.

After meeting with the victim, the officer responded to the incident location and observed a large amount of blood on the ground exactly where the victim indicated the incident happened, the report said.

Based on the victim’s statements, injuries and blood observed on the scene, a probable cause affidavit was completed for the arrest of Baez, the report said. He was ultimately arrested Thursday evening.

The New York native was charged with simple battery. He was transported to the Lake County Jail and released after posting $1,000 bond.
