94-year-old Leesburg man killed in crash near The Plantation

A 94-year-old Leesburg man was killed in a crash Sunday afternoon near The Plantation on U.S. Hwy. 27.

The 94-year-old was driving a 2015 Subaru Forrester at 4:13 p.m. traveling eastbound on Plantation Boulevard and attempting to make a left turn onto U.S. Hwy. 27 to travel north, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

His vehicle was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 32-year-old Leesburg man who was southbound on U.S. Hwy. 27. The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was not able to stop in time for a traffic signal, the report said.

The 94-year-old was transported to Blue Cedar Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The other driver was transported to UF Health-Leesburg Hospital, having suffered minor injuries. The report indicated he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation.
