Leesburg to step up parking rules enforcement in downtown area

In an effort to respond to recent parking complaints heard by the city commission, the Leesburg Police Department will be stepping up enforcement of parking rules in the downtown area.

Through the end of 2023, the police department will issue warnings for parking violations including but not limited to the following: parking over the allotted time; vehicles parked facing oncoming traffic; vehicles that are double parked; handicap parking; occupying more than one spot; obstructing a sidewalk, road, fire hydrant; and parking in areas designated “No Parking.” All vehicles will be subject to enforcement efforts.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, violations will result in a citation being issued. The aim is to promote voluntary compliance. By issuing warnings for several weeks of the program, the city hopes to encourage everyone to become aware of parking restrictions, thereby avoiding future fines.

“The city does not want to issue parking tickets,” said City Manager Al Minner. “However, we are committed to ensuring that the downtown area is accessible and enjoyable for everyone and that downtown businesses have spaces available for their customers to park as well as for visitors who come to the city.”

Many parking spaces in the downtown district have a three-hour limit from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Downtown visitors who know they will be longer than three hours are encouraged to use the downtown parking garage which does not have time restrictions.

The Public Works Department is currently conducting a parking survey with GAI Consultants. The result of the survey will be presented publicly to the city commission in the near future. Based on this report, a goal will be established to enhance downtown parking.
