Leesburg announces groundbreaking on $39.8 million wastewater project

The city of Leesburg will be holding an official groundbreaking ceremony for the $39.8 million Turnpike Wastewater Treatment Facility expansion project at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9.

The project is located at the Turnpike Wastewater Facility at 1600 County Road 470. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

The project will expand the plant capacity from 4.5 million gallons per day (MGD) to 6 MGD. The city expanded the capacity of the treatment facility from 3 MGD to 4.5 MGD in 2022.

The explosive growth has forced Leesburg to invest in infrastructure to serve the thousands of homes coming to the southern part of the city.

In September of this year, The Villages purchased a 3,200 acre parcel which abuts the massive retirement community’s development in Leesburg. Thousands of homes along with commercial buildings will be constructed and served by the expanded Turnpike Wastewater Treatment Facility.
