Samuel Wesley Humphrey was born on December 16, 1938 to James and Toy Humphrey in Bainbridge, Georgia. He moved to Florida during his youth and eventually became a star running back for Tavares High School, Class of 1959. He joined the National Guard Reserves soon after graduation.
Wesley met his match when he met the love of his life, Lennie Walters. She was his high school sweetheart and became his wife of 54 years. They were married November 29, 1963 in the Assembly of God Church in Tavares, Florida. Together they raised 3 sons, Dennis Humphrey of Mount Dora, Greg Humphrey of Wildwood and Jeff Humphrey of Grand Island. Between their three sons, they were blessed with 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Lennie went home to Jesus in November of 2017.
Wesley worked as a Warehouse Supervisor for Mid Florida Freezers until his retirement. When he wasn’t working to provide for his family, he could be found at a ball field or fishing with his boys. Wesley and Lennie opened their home constantly to anyone who needed them. There were dozens of grandchildren, nieces and nephews who spent many nights on their pull-out couch or around their table playing cards. There was always a hot meal, a big hug and a smile for anyone who found themselves on the Humphrey door step. Morningside Street will never be the same without them.
Wesley was the most kind and joyful man one could ever meet and he will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends.
He is now reunited in Heaven with his Lennie, we imagine he’s never been happier to be home.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday September 26th at 10 am at Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home at 226 E Burleigh Blvd in Tavares. A service will follow at 11 am in the chapel. Internment will take place at Lakeside Memory Gardens in Eustis following the service.
