A recently released Lake County Jail inmate is back behind bars after he reportedly failed to pay for a cab ride in Leesburg.

Shawn Wayne Wolford, 36, was charged with petit theft (two or more prior convictions). Jail records show Wolford was released March 13 after serving a year for felony theft, trespassing, and battery on an officer.

A Leesburg Police officer responded Tuesday night to the TownPlace Suites by Marriott, 238 Eagles Watch St., after the taxi driver reported Wolford refused to pay a $23 fare. The officer spoke with Wolford, who claimed he left his money in his hotel room, according to the arrest report.

It turns out Wolford didn’t have a room at the hotel, and he confessed to the officer he didn’t have enough money to pay for the taxi, the report said.

Wolford, who has nine prior theft convictions, was arrested and taken back to jail, where his bond was set at $2,000. He’s due to appear in Lake County Court on April 17.
