Leesburg police capture wanted man who fled traffic stop

Leesburg police arrested a fugitive who fled a traffic stop.

A Fruitland Park police officer had assisted a Lake County deputy who ran the plate of a vehicle Friday and found that the owner of the vehicle,48-year-old Robert Wayne Williams, was wanted on several felony warrants out of Marion County.

When the officer saw Williams pull out of a Circle K gas station, he started to follow him. When the officer attempted a traffic stop Williams kept on driving and began to swerve from lane to lane while driving under the speed limit. As Williams approached Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, he accelerated to a high speed . The Fruitland Park officer terminated his pursuit and was informed shortly there after that Leesburg officers had him in custody.

The Fruitland Park officer obtained the Circle K security tapes showing Williams to be the person driving the vehicle.

Williams was taken to the Lake County Jail where he was charged with fleeing to elude . Bond was set at $2,000.
