12-year-old student caught with knife at Oak Park Middle School

A 12-year-old student at Oak Park Middle School in Leesburg was arrested Tuesday for carrying a knife on school property.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office report, the school resource deputy was informed by a student that a male classmate was in possession of a “big ass brown kitchen knife.” The deputy spoke with the student and asked if he was carrying a knife. The student responded that he had a knife in his pocket.

The deputy escorted the student out the view of other students and conducted a search, which revealed a large kitchen knife in his front-right pocket. The blade was 6 inches long and was attached to brown handle, the report said.

The student repeatedly said he forgot he had the knife on him, but he also said he had been adjusting the positioning of the knife inside his pocket because the handle kept poking out, according to the report.

The student was charged with possession of a weapon on school property. He was taken to the Lake County Jail without incident and his mother was notified. The school’s administration will handle discipline.
