A Summerfield woman being booked for driving with a suspended license had a drug charge added when methamphetamine was pulled out of her pocket at the Leesburg Police Department.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, an officer observed an SUV traveling north on U.S. Highway 441 with a headlight out. The officer pulled the vehicle over near the North Lake Plaza shopping center, 1706 Citrus Blvd., and spoke with the driver – 40-year-old Denese Belinda Lee, according to the police report.

When the officer asked for Lee’s drivers license and vehicle registration, Lee said it was in her purse on the front passenger side. Instead of having her dig through the bag, the officer asked her to identify herself by giving her name and date of birth. After running the information through the state Driver and Vehicle Information Database, the officer learned that Lee’s license was currently suspended and she had three prior convictions for driving with a suspended license, the report said.

Lee was taken to the police station for booking. Once there, she was searched by a female office, who found a small plastic container containing a white substance in Lee’s front right pocket. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 0.83 grams, according to the report.

Lee was given a written warning for the headlight and charged with possession of methamphetamine and driving with a suspended license with knowledge. She was taken to the Lake County Jail, where she was released Tuesday morning on $3,000 bond. Lee is due to appear in Lake County Court on Sept. 19.
