A Leesburg woman with multiple convictions for retail theft is back in jail after being caught trying to steal from a secondhand clothing store.

At around 5 p.m. Tuesday, a Leesburg police officer responded to a report of a retail theft in progress at Sprout Fitters Children’s Resale, located at 10601 U.S. Highway 441. A security employee at the store was holding onto a white female who was yelling and trying to leave, according to the police report.

The woman was identified as 35-year-old Christina Joy Redding, of 11100 Sycamore Lane #20. She had been observed concealing clothing items in her white purse, the report said.

The officer asked Redding to empty the contents of her purse, and she pulled out clothing items that were still clearly marked/tagged as belonging to the business. The items included one necklace, one ring, one undergarment, one tank top shirt, a one-piece dress, and a skirt. The total value of the items was $82.32, according to the report.

A criminal background check showed Redding was convicted of retail theft in December 2016 and October 2020. She was placed under arrest without incident. While still at the store, she was remorseful for concealing and trying to steal the items, and she asked that the business not press charges, the report said.

Redding was taken to the Leesburg Police Department for booking. While there, she confirmed she had concealed the items with the intent of stealing them. She also said that after the security employee grabbed her at the store, she told them she would purchase the items she had concealed, according to the report.

Redding was charged with retail theft (two or more prior convictions) and taken to the Lake County Jail, where she’s being held on $2,000 bond. She’ll appear in Lake County Court on Sept. 12.
