A Leesburg woman was arrested Tuesday night on multiple fraud charges.

Leesburg detectives had been investigating a complaint from a Leesburg man that his checkbook had been stolen from his car and that two checks had been cashed by a woman that he does not know. The checks had been stolen late in 2020 and the man contacted the Leesburg Police Department on Dec. 15, 2021. The man said that he forgot to report it missing until two checks were returned to him from the account. These checks had been drafted by a third party without his knowledge or approval, according to the affidavit of probable cause prepared by the lead detective.

The first check drawn on the man’s account had been deposited into a personal SunTrust bank account. That check was in the amount $910 which was transferred from the man’s account. The second check in the amount of $990 was also deposited in the Sun Trust bank account but was not honored by the man’s bank.

An examination of security camera surveillance showed that the recipient of the funds was accompanied on both occasions  by 32-year-old Oteria L. Sanders. When Sanders was contacted by the police she said that a man who was buying drugs at the Rodeway Inn had given her the checks which were deposited into the other woman’s Sun Trust accounts.

Sanders was charged with cashing or depositing item with intent to defraud, criminal use of personal identification information, grand theft and scheming to defraud.

After processing at the Leesburg Police Department, she was taken to the Lake County Jail where bond was set at $18,000.
