A Leesburg man remains in the Lake County Jail after being arrested on drug charges in Eustis early Tuesday.

Alfred James Doan, 45, of 33319 Mitchell Drive, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug equipment, and a probation violation.  A criminal record search showed he has one prior narcotic-related arrest.

At around 1:30 a.m., a Eustis police officer followed a blue 2005 Ford Explorer as it turned into the parking lot of the closed Wells Fargo bank branch at 21 N. Grove St. The female driver of the Explorer got out of the vehicle and walked towards the officer, and they had a consensual conversation. While they were talking, the officer noticed the woman had several sores and track marks on her arm, which are indicators of drug use, according to the police report.

The officer then spoke with the passenger in the vehicle, who was later identified as Doan. While the officer was running Doan’s information, another officer arrived and asked the driver for permission to search the vehicle, which she gave. During the search, officers found a black book bag behind the head rest of the front passenger seat. Inside the book bag was a small glass pipe with residue on it. No other contraband was found in the vehicle, the report said.

Due to the pipe being found behind Doan’s seat, he was placed in handcuffs and searched. Inside his left cargo pocket was a small zip-lock bag containing a clear crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. Doan was arrested and taken to the Eustis Police Department for processing before being transported to jail, according to the report.

Doan is currently being held on $3,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Lake County Court at 8 a.m. May 10.
