A would-be diner was arrested after he attempted to buy a meal with a debit card he claimed he found on the counter at Steak ’n Shake in Leesburg.

Christopher Brandon Purvis, 38, of Eustis, attempted to pay for food items Sunday afternoon at the restaurant at 10650 U.S. Hwy. 441. When the bank declined to pay the charges the restaurant manager examined the debit card. She recognized the name on the card and knew the owner of the card had reported it stolen. Leesburg police were called to the restaurant.

Purvis became agitated at the questioning from police and claimed he found the card on the restaurant counter.

Purvis was placed under arrest for possession of a stolen debt card. After processing at the Leesburg Police Department, he was booked at the Lake County jail where bond was set at $2,000. Purvis has a lengthy criminal history with 14 previous arrests in Lake County.

He had been released from the Lake County Jail three days before this arrest at Steak ’n Shake. He had been held on drug charges for more than a month.
