Pedestrian dies at Leesburg hospital after hit by pickup truck

A pedestrian died at UF Health-Leesburg Hospital after being hit by a pickup truck early Thursday morning on State Road 44 in Leesburg.

The 48-year-old man at about 1 a.m. walked into the westbound lanes of State Road 44, just east of Bottle Brush Court, and stepped into the path of a 2011 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by 61-year-old Frederick Fashaw of Eustis.

The injured pedestrian was transported to the hospital by Lake EMS and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, according to the Leesburg Police Department. Farshaw was uninjured in the crash.

Traffic was diverted around the scene for approximately three hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the Leesburg Police Department Traffic Unit, however it appears the pedestrian was “at-fault” at this time.
