A Leesburg man driving a stolen car was arrested on a drunk driving charge.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy was on patrol Sunday on Kings Highway in Center Hill when he received a message that a late model Ford Fusion was speeding and weaving all over the road. The deputy spotted the vehicle in a Dollar General parking lot.

Daevon Maitland, 30, exited the vehicle and appeared to have trouble with his balance. The deputy called in the Ford’s license plate number and learned it had been reported stolen that morning to the Leesburg Police Department. Contact was made with the Ford’s owner who indicated she wanted to press charges against Maitland.

The deputy could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Maitland as he was swaying side to side. Maitland agreed to participate in standardized field sobriety exercises which indicated he was impaired. He provided breath samples which registered .236 and .228 blood alcohol content.

Maitland was placed under arrest and transported to the Sumter County Detention Center where he was charged with DUI and grand theft of an automobile. Bond was set at $3,000.
