A former Lake County sheriff has died after losing his battle with cancer.
Gary S. Borders was appointed sheriff in Lake County in 2006 following the death of Sheriff Chris Daniels.
Borders began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and came to Lake County in 1991. Borders served as the Lake County Jail administrator from 1991 until his appointment as sheriff. In 2008, Borders was elected as sheriff and served two more terms before his retirement in 2017.
Borders lived out his retirement in Howey-In-The-Hills before losing his battle with cancer.
“Sheriff Borders was loved and adored by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as well as the citizens of Lake County. Ceremonial arrangements are forthcoming and will be properly announced once they are solidified,” the sheriff’s said in a statement announcing his death.
