A 69-year-old Leesburg man was booked Tuesday at the Lake County Jail in an alleged attack on his girlfriend last month.

Randy W. Powell is facing a charge of aggravated battery with a weapon in an Aug. 19 incident.

A 37-year-old woman was walking on Lockwood Street in Leesburg when she saw a car come to a sudden stop, according to the arrest warrant. A woman got out of the car and was trying to get something out of the vehicle when the male passenger moved into the driver’s seat and started to drive off, striking and dragging the woman a short distance before stopping the car.

The witness approached the victim to ascertain her condition. Powell got out of the car and began trying to take the victim’s cell phone.

When the victim refused to surrender the cell phone, Powell attempted to kick her.

At that point the bystander intervened, prompting Powell to get into the car and flee.

The victim, who had suffered minor injuries, was checked by Lake EMS but refused further treatment.

Powell was tracked down and taken into custody. The North Carolina native was booked at the Lake County Jail on $10,000 bond.
