Leesburg police seeking tips in fatal shooting

Police are searching for a suspect in the death of a man who was shot late Wednesday night in Leesburg.

Michael Pettis Jr., 34, of Leesburg, was pronounced dead by paramedics after his body was found lying in a yard in the 1000 block of West Line Street at 11:54 p.m., the Leesburg Police Department said.

Police had been called to the area about 15 minutes earlier in response to a complaint about gunfire being heard, but they found nothing at the time. Officers returned soon after when someone reported discovering the body, said Leesburg Police Department spokesman Capt. Joe Iozzi.

Police cordoned off the area and began a search for the killer but were unable to locate a suspect.

Leesburg detectives have taken over the investigation.

Leesurg police say the shooting does not appear to be random, and detectives are asking anyone with information to call the criminal investigations division at 352-728-9862 or Crimeline of Central Florida at 1-800-423-TIPS. Crimeline is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest.
