An Altoona man who was found sleeping in his car in a Leesburg hotel parking lot has been arrested on drug possession and other charges.

William Dempsey, 44, was awakened by a flashlight-wielding officer around 9:30 p.m. Saturday following a call from management at the Quality Inn at 1392 W. North Blvd.

Dempsey, who was not renting a room at the hotel, had been seen sleeping in his grey Chevrolet for the past six hours, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

When questioned, he told police he didn’t know how he’d gotten there but later claimed a cousin was staying at the hotel. He also acknowledged not having a valid driver’s license and admitted he’d had “a few beers” throughout the day.

After discovering Dempsey had an active warrant based on violating probation for driving with a suspended license and possession of methamphetamine, the officer placed him under arrest and searched his car, where he found a small plastic bag containing meth.

Dempsey is being held on $2,000 bond at the Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 30.
