A traffic violation landed a Leesburg man in jail after police found drugs in his car.
Brandon Smith, 33, was parking his black Lincoln at the B&M Superette grocery store at 2350 Montclair Rd. at 6:30 p.m. Sunday when a deputy stopped him for running a stop sign moments earlier, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
After discovering Smith’s license was suspended for failing to pay a traffic ticket, deputies used a drug-sniffing dog to conduct an open-air sniff which established the presence of drugs. Officers then searched Smith’s car, where they found a syringe containing liquid meth in a zipper pouch along with several cut straws and glass pipes.
Smith and his passenger initially denied ownership of the meth and drug paraphernalia, but after police placed Smith under arrest for driving with a suspended license, he acknowledged becoming addicted to drugs due to severe burns covering much of his body.
Smith was booked in to the Lake County Jail where he was booked on $3,500 bond. His court date is set for Aug. 30.
