License-less and ‘confused’ Leesburg woman nabbed after smacking into stop sign

Samantha Kay Knutsen

A Leesburg woman was jailed Sunday morning after ramming into a stop sign.

Leesburg Police officers responded to the area around 2910 Pecan Avenue after receiving a call about a loud noise, possibly in reference to a vehicle crash. The caller later reported that he noticed a vehicle near the intersection of Popular Avenue and Pecan Avenue that had struck a stop sign, a Leesburg Police report states.

When officers arrived shortly after 2 a.m., they found a gray 2016 Toyota Camry resting against the stop sign. The vehicle was running and its backup lights were on. They made contact with the driver, 33-year-old Samantha Kay Knutsen, who was “difficult to understand and appeared to be confused,” a Leesburg Police report states.

Knutsen refused medical treatment several times and was unable to provide her identification. She looked in her purse several times and then “just stared” at an officer. The officer asked Knutsen if she knew where she was and that she had backed into the stop sign. She claimed she hadn’t hit the stop sign and when asked what city she was in, she replied that she was in Florida. When asked her address, she replied, “1606 Leesburg,” the report says.

Officers finally were able to obtain Knutsen’s identity when her roommate – also a registered owner of the vehicle –arrived at the scene. The roommate told officers that Knutsen didn’t have a Florida driver’s license but did have one from Alaska. But he said he didn’t believe the Alaska license was valid, the report says.

A computer check confirmed that Knutsen’s Alaska driver’s license had been revoked. It also showed that Knutsen had been convicted of driving under the influence on Feb. 8, 2009 and again on June 3, 2019. Her license had been revoked until June 10, 2022, the report says.

Units from Leesburg Fire Rescue and Lake EMS also responded to the incident and determined that Knutsen needed further medical treatment. She was transported to UF Health Leesburg Hospital and after being discharged, was taken to the Lake County Jail.

Knutsen, who lives at 1606 Crest Ave. in Leesburg, was charged with driving with license suspended or revoked. She was released Sunday morning on $10,000 bond and is due in court Jan. 4 at 8 a.m., jail records show.
